Building trust to defeat fake news

Every day some 50,000 web pages come online, offering a smorgasbord of information to consume, but when it comes to news do people really want to know what’s behind the stories they read online?

The Trust Project is hoping they do and recently launched digital standards to show things like who wrote a story, whether it’s news or opinion and who owns the site publishing it.

The Project, a consortia that includes the likes of The Economist, The Washington Post and 75 other news organisations, as well as online giants like Google and Facebook, hope it will raise the profile of quality journalism. Read the rest of this entry »

Slower speeds for faster growth as online firms continue adapting to India’s mobile market

To describe the growth of the internet in India as explosive probably downplays the rate of change taking place.

Every second three more Indians come online for the first time, adding another 10,000 people every hour to the country’s online user base.

So it’s no surprise that internet firms – particularly those of a social nature – are working hard to overcome barriers to access that range from low-powered phones to 2G connections to very little data. Read the rest of this entry »

Google goes local with mobile location-based news

The regular requests for my location have so far been the most annoying feature of Google’s otherwise useful iPhone app.

Now this hitherto unexplained – and constant – request starts to make (a little) sense as Google pushes into local, location-based news for mobiles.

News Near You is a new feature on Google’s mobile app that analyses both the content of a story and the location of the source to find news about particular cities and their surrounding area. Read the rest of this entry »
