Slower speeds for faster growth as online firms continue adapting to India’s mobile market

To describe the growth of the internet in India as explosive probably downplays the rate of change taking place.

Every second three more Indians come online for the first time, adding another 10,000 people every hour to the country’s online user base.

So it’s no surprise that internet firms – particularly those of a social nature – are working hard to overcome barriers to access that range from low-powered phones to 2G connections to very little data. Read the rest of this entry »

Facebook Live and the new television – from Steve Reich to the US vice presidential debates

Last week I happened upon a live performance by the London Contemporary Orchestra of Steve Reich’s hypnotic and moving Different Trains.

UK millennials are Europe’s heaviest users of social media, according to new research by comScore.

Twitter tries a new approach to music

Pitchfork Twitter Audio Card Sleater-Kinney podcastSome seven months after killing off its short-lived #Music initiative Twitter is having another go at more closely integrating itself into the digital music ecosystem.

The social network’s recently launched Audio Cards allow users to listen to songs, podcasts and other audio recordings directly in their timeline – though, for the time being, only if they come from SoundCloud.

Although it works to some extent within on a desktop/laptop, the initiative is explicitly ‘mobile first’. On iOS and Android mobile devices a single tap of an Audio Card lets you listen to the recording directly in your timeline. Read the rest of this entry »

In a move more likely to provoke a shrug of our collective shoulders than a lament for its passing, Twitter has decided to axe its #Music service.

Centred around a mobile app that was meant to help users discover new music and artists based on tweets, #Music was given a big launch last year for iOS devices.
